Hunger in India

I just read an article “The hidden hunger behind India’s huge success,” written by Matt Wade in Khandwa, Central India. This article is about a young baby that is only four months old but weights 3 pounds and 4.8 ounces. The mother’s milk has dried up, so she couldn’t feed her four month old baby. About one-third of the World Health Organization says this is normal for this age. The way her skin looks like in this picture is a sign of malnutrition (Wade, 2009).

India has been one of the fastest growing economy and average income has increase rapidly for some years. The group of middle class in India has been growing rapidly. About 230 million people in India go through hunger. One-forth of the world’s hunger is in India (Wade,2009).
Prakash mentioned that India is getting new malls and shopping centres but the children in India are dying of hunger. Children were sent to the goveremnt rehabilitation centers to get food for the children so they can go through development both physically and mentally (Wade,2009).

When the Government got this request, the goverement was in denial. The government said the children are dying from seasonal illness, not malnutrition. The government will not admit that the children are dying from hunger because that will be considered a state failure (Wade,2009).
More and more people could by food from the open markets instead of getting crops from farmers (Wade,2009).

In my opinion, I think that it is ironic that India has been one of the fastest growing economy and they still have children that suffer hunger. I think that the crops should continue and the open market should stop in all countries. We can start eating healthier for cheaper money. India has a lot of money but they use the money for other things, such as, feeding their children who suffer through hunger.

The government is in denial that the children are not going through hunger. Some action needs to be done because there is evidence that children are dying from hunger. One out of ten children died due to hunger. There are no evidence that these children are dying from seasonal illness.

India’s government has a lot of cleaning up to do. They need to be educated that these children are dying from hunger. Denial and covering up will not help these children at all. Any thoughts, comments or ideas?

  1. The article that you did read made me upset with the government in India and you are right that the children are important and have to eat the foods. The children don't eat very much and they become unhelthy and will die. I don't support the government's belief about to pay things instead of foods. That is really silly to ignore foods for children. The government should know better and needs to change some ways that will be better for children and people in India. I am really sad that the govenrment doesn't support the right of children for hunger. Honestly, I don't mean to be mean but I am glad not to live in India now.

  2. Your blog had a lot of comments that made me stop and think. You are right. It is really ironic that India has one of the fastest growing economy and yet, there are so many children there suffering from malnutrition. That is sad. I was wondering about the government rehabilitation centers, I wonder if they do more harm than good? Are they "spoon feeding" them. The reason why I say this is because they need to be able to learn how to pull themselves out of the despair they have gotten themselves in so that they can fight for their own lives if they ever get in trouble again. I do not think it is just the government that is in denial. I think it is the people themselves that are in denial. They need to fight for themselves and learn how to do it themselves. It will be tough but I think, ultimately, worth it. Your blog really brought up a lot of issues.

  3. This is really heartbreaking!

In this India as you mention, they need set up some adjust laws, to not allow in this country or all over in United of State of America to not allow any children to be hungry! All children are innocent and don’t understand why they have to go through like this.

I’m a mother of two children, they are lucky to have everything in the house, food to put on the table. I wish all children could live with us but I cannot afford them but I a happier to become member some kind of organization to help children or hungry family. Many people don’t realize how much this will meant to them and their health as well.

I do really like Jessica’s comment to make this good point for this article.

  4. When I first saw the picture of the baby, it really broke my heart, how can they do that to a baby? If I was a mother, I would do anything to find food and milk to feed my baby because I could not stand to see my baby like this.

For the government, I felt like why is he a government if he is denying that the children are dying from hunger? It is cruel and selfish of the government to do that and people can blame him for the children's deaths because he didn't help. I think India needs to have a new government that do care about the children because he is responsible for everyone including the children.

  5. Wow you really caught my attention with the picture. Yes it is ironic that India is the world's fast growing economy but maybe the real reason is because India has way too much people living there. It is predicted that it will take over the country population rate in a year or two over China. So maybe families are having too many kids that they don't have enough kids to feed. Did the article say anything about India's high rate of population?
